Wonder – by R.J. Palacio

This book is about a boy named Auggie Pullman. He is a ten-year-old boy who has severe facial differences. He was homeschooled, but he goes to a middle school called Beecher Prep. He faces bullying and makes good friends. In the past, he couldn’t make friends because people would look away after seeing his face. Later, he has a fight with one of his first friends. They become friends again after they solve their misunderstanding. Although he faces bullies, he eventually gets used to Beecher Prep.

There are many characters in this story, but the most important characters are Auggie Pullman, Jack Will, Summer, and Via Pullman. First, Auggie Pullman, whose full name is August Pullman, is the main character in this story. Because of his facial differences, he finds it hard to adjust to Beecher Prep. Second, Jack Will is Auggie’s best friend until they get into a fight. Later, they become friends again after the misunderstanding is cleared up. Third, Summer is another friend. She helps Auggie stand up to bullies and helps solve the fight between Auggie and Jack. Finally, there is Via Pullman, who is Auggie’s sister.

If I were in Jack Will’s or Summer’s point of view, I would help my friend who was getting bullied. Like Summer, I would help my friend get out of trouble. If one of my friends got into an argument with another friend, I would stop them from arguing and ask what happened. I would like to solve the problem before continuing what we were doing.

For some basic information, this book is divided into eight different parts. There is no information in the book that says how many chapters there are because there are a lot of chapters. Part One has 30 chapters. This is a pretty thick book, and there aren’t any pictures. The Lexile level for Wonder is 790L. I read it in fourth grade, and it wasn’t really hard. I think you can read it in third grade.
